Work in Progress. . .

Here's an idea I had this week. Only problem is what do you title it? "tail"gating. Life in the fast lane? Figured I get a reaction before going on to a more finished piece.

Painting Studies

Some of my weekly(ish) paintings. I have some that I need to scan. These ones are digital, and normally roughly based off of an iphone pic that I've taken.

Week 1

So almost in time for the Chinese New Year I wanted start a goal to paint something every week of the year.  This past weekend, I did a painting nearby my house in the Presidio for a charity auction at work. So the idea is that I'll posting these regularly, but if they are quicker small studies I may be grouping a few of them together.

Austin 360 Bridge Painting and Time lapse Video

A 3X5 foot Painting of one of my favorite places in the world, commissioned by some of my favorite people. I painted this over the break while I was in Texas, and filmed it taking a picture every 5 seconds over the course of the two days. Click here to see the video.

Squirrel Pro

Nature is pretty extreme sometimes.

*Also sorry if you've been getting emails about stuff that I did about a year ago. I guess I accidentally edited an old post or something.

Almost, Maine Inspired Collaboration

This piece is inspired by the play "Almost, Maine" by John Cariani. I was approached by my friend who is directing a production of the play next week in San Diego. After talking with her about some of the rich visuals of the play, and after thinking how it would be cool to do something that crossed over into another art form this piece came to about.

A large canvas print will be on display by the ticket booth, and I will be selling a limited number of other signed prints if anyone is interested Click Here!

One more!

*I decided to go back and make it more of a finished painting.*

Continuing on the theme from my last post, I had to draw up this idea. The Lion/pug cross breed. I really started to like it and wanted to throw it up before I took it to a finished painting, and I'm playing with the level of finish which has been fun for me. Might have to come back to it though.

Cross Breed

So I did this sketch and thought it was pretty funny and worthy to paint up this evening. I figure future advances in technology will allow us to cross breed many more species and create status symbols for the rich.

You may note this is reminiscent of the very inspiring Bobby Chiu, Intially I didn't have his style in mind but he his style definitely influenced the piece subconsciously and consciously toward the end!

Dart Frog Maquette!

So here's what I've been spending my tuesday nights on. Of course there are always things I look back and would have done differently, but the class was great and I learned a ton. It makes a huge difference when you can ask someone who know hows to make pretty much anything, and provides you with the tools and materials. (Richard Miller our teacher was in the ILM model shop for like 25 years. He had some amazing stories.) It was 8 weekly classes three hours each, I finally finished painting it this past Tuesday. I hope you guys like it, I've been staring at it way too long! (the piece of wood is holding up the arm because he was starting to droop down even after baking unfortunately)

Frog Doodle!!

Incase anyone wanted an update on my quest for a decent digital paint setup: I returned my Imac, (My old tablet was too small for a massive 27 in screen, so instead of getting a bigger tablet I realized I could just get a cintiq and a cheaper PC for not too much more. Little did I know they are really hard to find, but after much searching I got a hold of a refurbished cintiq 21ux! Man it is nice, I did this little doodle this evening, after 8 hours of work, and 3 hours of a maquette class, lots of art today! The class is taught by ILM model shop veteran Richard miller, It's been really fun I'll be posting my maquette in a few weeks which is actually the older version of this little guy.

Tree bird

Monday night painting. Kind of a memory sketch of a few things combined, minus the bird. ps. I like to backlight everything.

Make it real.

A friend at worked liked a tiger sketch I did a while back and wanted to model it! I thought that was awesome and told him I would update it and do a turn around of it. It's taken forever to get around to it, luckily he has been patient, but I think I am finally ready to move on/ see what he does with it.

Added bonus:

This was a lunch doodle, that I cleaned up a little. Fat panda's have never been drawn before I know. So friends I know I should be posting more, and actually I'm getting a new setup at home (a brand new just updated 27 in imac!) so maybe I will . . . maybe.

Watercolor studies.

So, I live in the Presidio of San Francisco. Which basically means I live in the city but seriously see coyotes wandering by my house. It's a beautiful area that I've been meaning get out and paint. Saturday was such a nice day that I had no excuse. So here are the first of potentially weekly paintings, weather permiting.

And hour-ish. I kind of lost track of time.

Attempting to capture a quickly changing sunset for fun after. Kinda hard.

Portrait that my of my brother I did a few months back that I never posted. About and hour and a half.

Update

I've been terrible at posting lately, but it isn't without good reason. For those of you who don't know I just started recently working for Lucasfilm Animation as a concept artist!!! I am really excited to be there and so far it has been great. I feel really lucky to have found something at such a great company doing what I want to do! I definitely still have a ton to learn but I'm trying to soak it all in from the great people I work with!

So my freetime has gone down considerably, but as I get more settled I'll try and post some stuff that I paint/draw outside of work.

Here is a quick shark sketch that I never posted that will have to do for now.

Being productive?

This is what happens when you read about chupacabras on wikipedia . . .

A quick color study for, you guessed it, a noahs ark concept. Had a few interesting ideas for it, and mainly want to build my portfolio doing visual development for it. (which would include lots of color key paintings and some designs in there, it should be fun.) So I am actually trying to be productive even though I am out of school and setting my own schedule!

Illustration and such . . .

I did this for a Schetchoholic.com competition of the theme "Nightmares". The silly part is that I waited till the last day to do it and didn't finish in time to submit . . .oh well. I still might mess with it more, something about it may need some tweaking to read better. Any suggestions?

Watercolor?

Utah lake

I got some new art stuff! Nice watercolors and white gouache, they're really fun. I've been trying to emulate this amazing artist, Nathan Fowkes. I was actually going to attend a seminar with him a couple weekends back but unfortunately I've been quite sick the past few weeks and couldn't go, which explains my lack of posting. So alas another day I will learn in person from Nathan, but until then I'll just try and mimic his beautiful work!
